Cinco de Mayo

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

One our most beloved drinking holidays is coming up in a few days….Cinco de Mayo! It got me to wondering, why do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo so I decided to see if I could find an answer. These are the results that I found:

Contrary to today’s popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. Mexican independence day is celebrated on September 16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is seen as a day to celebrate the Mexican heritage such as their food, culture, and traditions. Of course, it also gives us a great excuse to enjoy some Mexican drinks such as the ever popular margarita.

It all started in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla while the United States was currently busy in the Civil War. The French decided to take capture of the toehold of Mexico because they could then support the Confederate Army. In the end, the French were defeated in the Battle of Puebla which is why this battle is considered to be the turning point for the U.S. in the Civil War. From that point on, celebrations occurred on a yearly basis and by the 1980’s, it became commercialized on a large scale.

Whether you want to celebrate the Mexican-American culture or you just want a socially acceptable reason to drink, Fish Head Cantina has got you covered. We are offering $2.50 Coronas, $3 Jose Cuervo, $4 Margaritas and $6 tacos (2) from 6pm until close.
